Squarespace guide
Password-protected sites and pages, unpublished changes, and what clients see.
Review Studio was built for Squarespace sites. Your client reviews the real site, with its animations and scripts, without ever seeing your Squarespace password.
Password-protected sites
Most sites in progress are behind a site-wide password (Squarespace: Settings → Site availability → Password protected, or a trial site that isn't public yet).
- Create a review and paste the site URL. A
*.squarespace.comaddress or a custom domain both work. - Put the site password in Squarespace password.
- Share the review link.
The review unlocks the site on your server. The password isn't in the link, and your client never sees or types it. It's stored encrypted. You can change it later in Project details (leave it blank to keep the current one).
Password-protected pages
A single page can have its own page password. The review uses the one password saved on the review, and tries it on any lock screen it meets, site or page. So:
- If the page password is the same as the site password, it just works.
- If it's different, put the page's password on the review, or make a separate review for that page.
Sharing a site that isn't published
Squarespace has no staging, and the review can only open pages a visitor could reach. Draft and disabled pages can't be loaded. Options:
- A new site: keep it password-protected and share it through a review, as above. This is the usual trial-site flow.
- A change to a live site: build the new version as a page, give that page a password, and share it through a review. Swap it in once it's approved.
What clients see
- The real site, inside the review page, at desktop or phone size.
- No Squarespace login, no password screen, no editing tools.
- Clicks stay on the site. Other pages open inside the review, and links to other websites open in a new tab.
Desktop and mobile
Squarespace lets you edit two layouts: desktop and mobile. That's why reviews show desktop and mobile first. Tablet is there under More sizes if you want it.
The admin link
Add your site's admin link (for example https://your-site.squarespace.com/config) under Admin link and note when you create a review. It shows as Open site admin in the review, for you only, so you can jump straight to the page you need to fix.
If a page looks wrong
Squarespace template sites, including ones with animations, are what this is built for. A custom script that only runs on the site's own address can misbehave in the review. Use Open live page to compare, and tell your client if something is a review quirk rather than a real problem.
